Not a great measurement device
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought this at a chain home improvement store and plan on returning the device. The laser dot is nice for pointing, but since it measures using sound waves, you don’t really know where the sonic measuring system is pointed at, or what might be obstructing it. When you get a good reading, its accurate. But its hard to get a good reading. And once you’ve taken one reading, it is often hard to get another reading (possibly I’m misusing the device). If there is anything within a radius of a few feet of the device as it goes to the target, you can get corrupted readings. It would only be consistently useful in an empty house with all light colored walls.
Use high quality batteries; holding it still is difficult at times
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I like this small hand held measure with a few exceptions. If you don’t use high quailty batteries it doesn’t work accurately. Second because the base is not very wide it can be hard to hold it steady from certain angles. For example if trying to measure a space behind a refrigerator having to reach into the space and hold it steady and push the button at the same time is nearly impossible and difficult to get a consistantly accurate reading. It’s fine for open spaces that aren’t shadowed, etc. but for the tough areas a regular tape measure is more accurate and reliable.
Realtor’s tool

This inexpensive device is te best tool a Realtor could own. It pays for itself with the time it saves. Seems to be accurate and no problems so far!

Perfect PET TOY … if Your Dog (or Cat) Chases the “Red Dot”
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Alright… I admit, we never use this for its intended job (What? It measures something??) BUT its highest and best use is obviously as a Dog toy. We understand that cats are often attracted to laser dot play, but cannot offer any personal experience there, except to assume it would easily carry over into the feline world. As for canines, this is the best… da kine… it is what you have been looking for.
So, if you have a four-legged friend and know or suspect that it may have the gene for chasing the red laser dot, then this tool is what you want. The light is bright and easy to use (just double click the big button) for instant, hilarious fun. The Black Chow Chow prefers that we keep her RED DOT on the floor and moving… spinning, if possible. She’s to that breathless stage in her life — it’s almost an addiction — where all we have to do is point to the ground and she starts looking for her RED DOT. The big young Doberman thinks that the RED DOT on the ceiling is absolutely amazing and will follow that RED DOT nearly anywhere. (The Red Chow Chow thinks it is just stupid, but there’s one in every crowd.)
For the rest of us two-legged ones, we think its immediate, low-cost entertainment. Buy it and try it. You’ll see.
Unlike most laser pointers, the batteries seem to last forever and the dot is good and bright. The case is rugged and resists biting, but we advise that this is NOT A CHEW TOY.
Highly recommended!

IT’S GARBAGE!!! Bought this item today at a big chain hardware store. It was the only non traditional tape measure the had. So unreliable there is no point in using it. I can get it to repeat the same wrong measurement with consistency. About 1 out of 5 times it will get close (+/- 3 inches over an 18 ft distance) but unless your already good at judging distances how can you tell when it’s giving one of its better answers. There’s probably a ton of technical reasons why it can’t read accurately, like it not perpendicular to the opposite surface) but try as I may in my rectangular rooms, I couldn’t get it to work right twice in a row.
Laser Tape
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Its very accurate and simple to use, great for those times when you need an accurate measurement but you dont have someone to hold the end of the tape for you.
Great for quick estimation with some egregious limitations
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This can be a useful tool, but one needs to learn about the limitations this type of device has.
I used the word egregious in the title because there seemed to be a lot of people who bought this tool without first understanding what this tool can and cannot do.
This tool uses sonic emission to estimate the distance between the target object and the emission source(this tool). The nature of such estimation yield accurate results only under ideal situations. It needs to be held level, so that the sonic emission can bounce and return in a straight path. That also means it works best against a flat area and against objects of hard material that won’t absorb the sonic emission.
This tool certainly has limited usefulness because its limitations, but it’s still good for certain uses such as getting a ball park figure of an area of a room for instance. This tool is currently priced a bit high in my opinion and thus only 3 stars. Add another star if you can find this for $10-15.
Useless, totally useless
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Useless, totally useless. For $20, you are better off buying a tape measure. This devise is so inaccurate it is not funny. I hope you are lucky like me and can return it for your money back.

STRAIT-LINE 6041401CD Sonic Laser Tape 50
I purchase this tool for my child who’s a Real Estate Agent. She uses it to measure living space for her clients and posts the square footage in advertisment of the properties she sells. She says it’s the perfect assistant. It’s accurate in measuring, light weight, compact and portable.
The Strait Story
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Extremely disappointed with this thing. It does not measure accurately as verified by an old fashioned tape measure. It is very misleading since this does not use a laser to measure but uses sound. It may work for bats but this is for the birds.Every time I don’t review a product on Amazon before I buy I get burned. When will I ever learn.
Works as expected
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
It has been accurate when measuring the distance between walls, which is all that I have used it for at this point.
$15 at home depot
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I just bought this exact device for $15 at my local home depot. Testing it around the house it works great. Don’t think I’d trust it for buying materials but for estimating it seems like a great quick tool.
I’m Returning Mine Tomorrow-Totally Junk
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I am a Realtor and thought that this product would be great for me. I am totally disappointed. I tried it for several days and had to manually measure the houses since this yellow peice of junk was giving me ridiculously wrong measurements. Today was the last straw as the homeowner was walking around with me and saw the inaccuracy of this yellow peice of junk.
Save your time and use the old fashioned tape measure if you care about accurate results.
You get what you pay for.

First, it’s important to note that this is not a laser measurer. This is a sonic measurer with a projected red dot. The difference in accuracy between the two technologies is striking. When measuring with this device, holding down the measurement button often results in a variation of 6″ – 15′ readings. While I can usually tell when something is an obvious error, I don’t want a measurer that I have to re-check with common sense. If I know a wall is around 30′, readings of 12′, 34′ and “ERROR” don’t give me a lot of confidence in this device’s accuracy, and those sorts of misreadings are the rule, not the exception. Furniture and other obstacles seem to enhance the problem, as they seem to disrupt the reflection of the sound.
The distance is limited as well. One reviewer suggested that to measure a 100′ wall, you should go find a lawn chair to stick halfway between the wall and myself. While technically true, I’m not inclined to carry a lawn chair around with me.
HOWEVER, I would instead recommend an actual laser unit. Stanley has a terrific true laser measurer you can find here on Amazon called (appropriately) the FatMax Tru Laser Measurer which is affordable, accurate and consistent. It runs about 100 bucks, but the difference in performance is well worth it. 25 bucks for a worthless tool, or 100 bucks for something I’ll use and trust?
If you’re not picky on accuracy, only need to measure distances under 50 feet, and really, really don’t want to spend more than 25 bucks, then maybe this thing will suffice. Otherwise, buying this thing would be a mistake.
Straight-line sonic laser….save your money
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Is it 21′3 or 23′5″? Like the previous review said, this thing is all over the place. Sometimes it’s on the spot, other times its so far off its ridiculous. DO NOT TRUST THIS THING, use a tape….I should have known better for the price.
Great for weekend warriors or DIYers
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
For the money – a great easy investment. We used it for our installation of our wooden fence, and tons of other household projects. I don’t know why it would get a bad review, it was simple, easy and effective.
A great tool with many uses at a good price point
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have tested my tool numerous times and I’m amazed at the level of accuracy it does have, considering the price and technology involved. It can be used very well to determine things like how many square feet of carpeting, tiling or other floor materials you might need, same thing for drywall. Establish foot runs for pipe, etc. Anybody who is a woodworker who would even consider buying this item is out of their minds. There simply are no woodworking applications I can think of that would benefit from this item. For most contractors and anyone who works in plaster, flooring, etc. it is an incredible time saver, especially when you need to give estimates or place bulk material orders
You can measure distances larger than 50′ by deliberatley placing objects in the path of the beam. I used a lawn chair to estimate the distance between fences in my backyard to give a measuremtn to a contractor. It came to 59 feet and 9 inches. He measured it 3 times with tape measures and came in at 59 feet and 7.75 inches. In this instance, the 1 1/4″ margin was more than allowable and while his measurement took 10 – 15 minutes to obtain, mine was obtained in less than 30 seconds.
One hint, a carpenters square or bubble level will help you keep the device square to a wall, etc. when getting measurements and will help with accuracy.

What a joke. My house is so much bigger then I ever imagined.A fool and his money were thusly parted.
Works but is limited
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The Strait-Line Sonic Laser Tape works great if you know and work within it’s limitations. I got mine for $8 and that’s about what it’s worth. To be accurate it must be perpendicular to the wall being measured. Because it works with a sonic tapping sound (the laser just helps you get the device positioned properly), objects in the way like furniture that absorb sound can throw off the measurement as well. While I wouldn’t trust it 100%, it is good for estimating paint, furniture layout etc. The ideal situation for the device would be an empty room with a flat ceiling and perpendicular straight walls. I wouldn’t trust it for exact measurements like needed for construction etc.
POS

You get what you pay for…This thing is a useless piece of crap. Apparently, it is the same distance from the kitchen to the end of the living room, as it is from the sun room to the end of the living room….there is at least a 20 foot difference that this thing does not seem to see. We have a vaulted ceiling, but it ain’t no 65 feet high…but wait, its 31 feet…no, 24 feet…hmm, this thing can’t seem to make up its mind. Made in China, what do you expect? The same negative review goes for my Strait Line stud finder, as well. No stud for 39 inches? Our house is of poor construction, but its not that bad. Come up with the extra money, and buy a reputable brand name, such as Husky or Stanley.
Works like it should but has obvious limitations
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This does what it is advertised to do. Put the butt against the wall and find the distance to the wall on the other side. So what’s the obvious limitation? You can’t measure anything in between like conventional tape! So forget about measuring objects, distances between studs, etc. You get the idea.
Useless peice of junk! Don’t waste your money
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This device was so inacurate that after using it for about 1/2 and hour I took the battery out put it back in the packaging and got a standard tape measure. What a HUGE disapointment. I have already returned mine and I will never buy a product from “straight line” agian.
You get what you pay for. It is cheap, useless.
Best,
Not a winner

I purchased this unit at the local lowes yesterday. It is not accurate or consistant at all. I would not recommend it.
Works OK for quick and dirty measurements
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I’m a general contractor and use this to make quick estimates of whole room square footage (Drywall, paint, etc.). It’s cheap looking, but as long as nothing is protruding into the path of the ultrasonic beam it works ok (+-1/2″ is more than enough precision for simple estimating). For absolute precision and for shooting between objects go with the PLS1 Laser unit from Pacific. BTW…my cats love chasing the laser dot. It was worth the money for that alone.
Optimist at best

I am a structural enigneer in southern California who often rely on accuracy of dimensions for use in design. Please don’t trust this device unless your tolerance is within the 2-3ft range.
Can’t complain. Great for realtors. Quick measuring rooms.

I am a realtor and I have to say this is a great tool. I use this to measure room sizes and it make fast work of the details. It also figures out sq ft. so it makes it a breeze to do listings.
Strait-line Sonic Laser Tape 50
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Besides being an amatuer woodworker, I also have been fixing
up our 100 yr old house.
I own several convential tape measures. Out of curiousity, I decided to buy the Strait-line Sonic Laser tape 50, wondering
if I could simplify my various measurement needs of my projects.
My biggest complaint is that this device does not provide
accuracy of less than an inch. My second complaint is that the
advertising for it does not clearly disclose this fact.
Due to this lack of accuracy, I can’t find any real use of
this device in anything I do. From my perspective, a waste of roughly $30.00
on a piece of garbage.
Hopefully there are other laser measure tapes on the market
that are more accurate….for now I will stick to my old fashioned method.
