Precision Laser Technology
Utilizing precision laser technology, the DLR165K takes length, area, and volume measurements that are accurate up to 1/16 inch. Whether you're trimming and scribing cabinets and counters or preparing to cut lumber, pipes, or conduit, you'll appreciate the DLR165K's fast measurement time of 0.5 to 4.0 seconds. You'll also love the easy-to-read digital display that shows all results in three units of measure: feet and inches, decimal feet, and metric.

4 Measuring Reference Points for Ease of Use
For further convenience, a single laser beam does both the pointing and the measuring. What's more, the DLR165K has four measuring reference points--back, front, swing-out extension pin for measuring from inside corners and channels, and center of tripod (sold separately). This means you can take several measurements simultaneously, without repositioning the unit. Also, a large range from two inches to 165 feet gives you the versatility you need to complete a variety of jobs.

3 Measurement Modes Offer Flexibility
Easier to use and more accurate than a tape measure, the DLR165K makes measuring a one-person job, even when walking off distances. In fact, its continuous-length mode automatically adjusts your measurement as you move forward, which means you won't waste time taking notes and repositioning the tool.

There's also an indirect measuring mode that calculates the distances that cannot be measured due to obstructions or lack of reflecting surfaces. Additionally, a continuous laser mode saves you time by reducing key strokes during rapid measurements.

World's Smallest Digital Range Finder
Measuring 4 x 2-15/16 x 1-1/4 inches, the DLR165K is the world's smallest digital range finder. You can easily fit it into your pocket, place it over your hand with the included hand strap, or hook its included carrying case on your belt loop. An added bonus, the DLR165K features an ergonomic soft grip area for a secure, comfortable hold.

One of Bosch's Most Innovative Measuring Tools
The DLR165K is part of Bosch's new line of compact, user-friendly, multipurpose measuring and layout tools. These tools are designed for optimum precision, so your project stays on course from start to finish. if you are looking for a laser measuring device, don’t even bother to look at anything else, this is by far one of the best units on here, and you CANNOT beat the price. the only complaint i have is one that applies to any other one, the laser is hard to see at daytime, but aside from that it’s smooth sailing!

    Simple, Useful, great tool.

For engineers, Surveys or any other measure it`s an useful tool to take accurate measurements over almost everything you need. almost, because the laser isn`t run well over desertical conditions or places with overlight.

Very functional, i use this tool on mining apps: drillholes, benchs, etc.

It works very well if it was cloudy day adn daytime.

When it is fine sunny day, it would be very difficult to see the laser far away.

It needs back light in the really dark night.

Anyway since I bought used one, it was very good price so it was very good deal for me.

I do lots of shop work but did not really need a device of this kind, however this Laser Ranger came up on the Amazon daily special list for about $65; I fell into the trap and bought it on impulse. It arrived promptly; it works very well and with astonishing precision over the distances which I tested… down to 8″, up to 120 feet. Given my use, I can’t say that its cost will be amortized in realistic terms any time soon. On the other hand, I find myself measuring things as a matter of interest (not matters of need) and that’s fun. Also, while laser distance measuring equipment remains expensive (well beyond $100 in most cases) not many of my colleagues/neighbors have them, so I have found the Bosch unit to be a great conversation piece. Overall, very nice to have.

I can’t describe how great this is for a remodel project. I am individually fitting 16 ft. studs to remodel an old building. This little device has saved a lot of steps up and down measuring, and seems to be extremely accurate.

I bought this item for my husband for Christmas, and he has been very, very pleased with it. And, it works as a great dog toy! Whenever my husband measures anything, the dog has a great time playing with the laser pointer. It’s like two presents in one!

Handy device. Accurate and easy to use. Got a good price at Amazon when it was one of the “Today’s Deals”. I was not the only one as they sold out in a hurry.

    WORKS GREAT!!
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Everything works great. The only things that I can complain about is that it doesn’t measure in inches, just feet and inches, 6′2″ not 74″. The other thing is that when taking measurements above head the button could be in a better place, like on the side where you would naturally hold it. Whatever, it’s 100 times faster than using a tape.

Great item. I am have been remodeling my house for some time now. Learning as I go along. I was doing baseboards and measuring by tape was somewhat difficult for me to get the exact measurement. When I saw the Bosch DLR165k Laser Measuring device I thought give it a shot. Boy, I am so glade I did. I find this little baby to be an invaluable collection to my tool chest. Measurement is right on. Easy to read display. Yes, it does only give you readout in feet and inches but that is no problem. It made measuring the baseboards a breeze. Found it great in measuring for my blinds. Real happy customer. Thanks Bosch & Amazon.

I live in the Southwest where we have a bright sun all the time. Outside I could not go more than 30 feet and still see the laser dot. Inside it was fine, but I bought it for outside work. Call the company thinking the laser glasses might help, and was told that the sun deteriorates the laser, and would not help. So returned it.

    Handy Tool
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Great for quick measurements, estimating amount of area in rooms for carpet or flooring. Wouldn’t want to use it for detailed measurements where cutting or trimming is involved since you’d have to do calculations and I have found it to be an eighth to a quarter inch off at times. Paid $75 for mine, worth every penny, have found many uses for it around the house.

  14. David Wells says:

Works very well, though needs inch reading
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Very handy device. I’m learning to use it more often as time goes by. There’s no substitute for a real tape measure for some things, especially the shorter distances, but having both handy can make a job go much more quickly.

That said, I agree with the others who’ve mentioned this unit does not measure in inches. It’s always feet + inches, which means a mental calculation is required before calling out or writing down the value. On the good side, my x12 multiplication speed is improving.

  15. M. Ross says:

Top Value for Precise Distance Finder
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This device is fantastic, accurate, and a huge value.

    The Good:

    * Accuracy is very good – I have found the accuracy of this device to be dead-on when used for cutting baseboard trim and crown molding, as advertised, to within 1/16 of an inch. In practice, though, it’s usually better than that, as the accuracy typically falls within the 1/16 inch range. (i.e. the true measurement is between, say, 18′ 3/16″ and 18′ 1/4″)

    * Easy to use – The manual does a decent job of explaining the features and the buttons have clear and intuitive pictographs. The memory function is great for estimating: Just set it in area mode- for example- then go room to room, measuring length and height, add to memory (M+), and repeat. When you are done with your rooms, hit M= and Presto! you’ve got total square feet. Nice!

    * Good range – 165 feet of accurate reading is quite good.

    * Ergonomics – The device has a nice, solid feel that fits well in the hand. It is compact enough to fit your pocket, though it comes with its own padded soft case that can be worn on a belt- a very nice feature

    * Value – For the features, quality, accuracy, and useful accessories (wrist strap and padded soft case) this is ridiculously inexpensive. (about eighty bucks, for reference)

    The perhaps not-so-good:

    * The conversions, as many have mentioned, lack an inches-and-fractions-only mode, leaving you with feet, inches, and fractions. (or decimal feet, or metric) I’m with the rest in that it would be nice to have this. For me, I use this tool to take the measure and then use my tape to mark my stock; my tape has feet + inches in addition to just inches so that’s a non-issue for me. For estimating, it hardly matters. For those times when I really need JUST inches and fractions, well… I just consider myself fortunate to have the opportunity to exercise my math skills, or use a calculator.

    Other Thoughts:

    * It would be nice if this model came with an IP Code (e.g. IP 54) to indicate resistance to intrusions of dust and water, like some other models have. (Thinking Stabila and Leica) The construction of this unit is tight, though, and I don’t see dust or splashes of water affecting it.

    * Country of Manufacture – For those who care, mine was assembled in Malaysia; the Bosch website indicates that as being one of three possible for this unit, the other two being Switzerland and Romania.

    * Seller – Mine came from Factory Depot. It came new, in a box with a factory seal. That’s good. But the date of manufacture on the unit is June, 2008- over one and a half years old by the time it came to me, which strikes me as being a little on the stale side. Works great and the batteries had life, so I’m happy, but I would pause before getting anything from this seller that I considered perishable.

    * Other things I like:

    – The padded case is really nice, as is the fact that it has an adjustable belt loop. This, the batteries that came included, as well as the wrist strap are really nice touches for a high quality tool that is already so inexpensively priced.

    – When a measurement is taken, the device makes a subtle ‘clunk’ that can be heard and felt. This is great for those environments where there is a lot of background noise- you can still feel when the measurement has been taken. Very slick!

    – The hard rubber grips on the sides and front face provide very good feel and an anti-slip surface.

    – The flip out rod that allows for diagonal measure in a box (such as window frames to check for squareness) is unobtrusive on the bottom of the unit.

This tool will easily and quickly pay for itself in time saved for estimating and measuring. While not perfect (for which I would expect to pay many times more) this unit can’t be touched by competitors in this price range or even below. I have used other, pricier products that go for three times what this one does and for the price, they don’t add significant functionality or accuracy for the money, in my opinion. Excellent buy, this!

    Excellent laser measuring device
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
As an insurance adjuster, I use mechanical tape measures for many different aspects of my job. I’ve tried the sonic measuring devices that use a laser pointer, and was very disappointed. I could never get a consistent or accurate reading, making it only useful as a paper weight. I was somewhat skeptical about the DLR165 device. Knowing that the DLR165 is an actual laser (not sonic) measuring device convinced me to give it a try. I am happy to report that this unit is very accurate. In fact I am able to take more accurate measurements with this tool than I can with my standard tape measure, especially when measuring distances greater than 10′ over obstacles. I used to have to drag my tape through all kinds of muck, mud, sewage, etc, while measuring and diagramming properties damaged by water and sewage. I’ve cut myself retracting the old steel tape. I’ve had my steel tape drop down a wall and arc across the prongs of a plug in, tripping the breaker and giving myself a bit of a shock to boot. I’ve had to dodge traffic while measuring accident scenes. I’ve had to estimate distances that were too high or inaccessible from the ground. A steel tape will only go so high before it breaks over. This DLR165 device has solved all of those problems noted above, allowing me to perform my job in a safer manner, and with much more accuracy. I highly recommend.

    Laser Measuring Device
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
When I first bought this measuring device, I thought it was an excellent tool, except for trying to measure something that was not against a wall, like the length of 2X4 laying on the floor. In those situations, I would have to create an ending point for the laser beam, by putting a blank object at the end of the 2X4 (a spot for the laser beam to hit), to show the proper length. Then, I started checking the actual lengths and thicknesses (2X4 lumber again, and some other objects in my shop) of some items that I already knew the measurements. I found the measurement shown in the display was not correct. In some cases, it was off almost 1/8 inch. Also, it was cumbersome and time consuming to use, as an example, when measuring a piece of wood laying on a floor. High Tech is not the best avenue here. I sent this back for a refund. I went back to mechanical tape measure. It’s not digital, but it is accurate. I think this tool has possibilities, with a little improvement in the tool itself.

I purchased this product (Bosch DLR165 laser distant measuring device ) about three weeks ago, we are installing new light fixtures at procise locations over machines to be relocated working off a layout print, measurements taken off Ibeams locations not good, so I measured from existing wall to Ibeam as reference, used laser shot to wall to get exact measurements a great tool don’t know how i got along with out it, and with max distant off 165 feet I give it five stars.

    Perfect for Crown Moulding
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This product is as accurate as a tape measure, but without the user error. To 1/16″. Honestly the most useful tool for crown moulding ever. One handed measurements, not having to worry about tape standout or having a helper, and get the ACTUAL measurement from corner to corner at the level you will install the moulding. Perfect. The only gripes others have is the fact that this tool doesn’t do ONLY inches. Not a problem if you snipe the measurement then pull a tape that has foot/inches marked on it. I don’t see the big deal, but in some applications may matter. But for eighty bucks, oh my. You can almost get a Fatmax tape measure for that much.

It also has this awesome continuous mode as well which can, say, help you lay out measurements along a wall at 1,2′-6″, 5′, 7′-4 5/16″, etc. just turn on the mode, and move away until you get the distance you want, and mark. I set up my nursery with custom mouldings in boxes on the wall and this mode was ridiculously helpful.

    Measurement made easy and inexpensive
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I found the Bosch DLR165 Laser Rangefinder is accurate to about 1/16th inch up to 160 feet. It measures linear, area, volume, continuous and indirect dimensions.

This is a nice tool. The feels comfortable in my hand and the display is clear and easy to read. The buttons are well labeled and easy to use. The DLR165 is a flexible measuring device and most of its functions work well.

Unfortunately, this device only has 3 measurement formats available: metric, feet w/ decimals, and feet and inches w/ fractions. In all my carpentry experience I have dealt with inches w/ fractions such as, 92 5/8″ – and the customary (English) formats available from this unit displays this measurement as 7′ 8 5/8″ or a decimal equivalent either of which that would then require conversion to inches. Other reviews have also found this to be a problem. Bosch could have done a better job with the software.

It won’t replace your tape measure but it can be used in place of a tape in many applications.

Another review stated that `For anything longer than 10 feet, a decent laser distance measure is likely more accurate than tape because it doesn’t sag or stretch like tape. For the money it really can’t be beat and typical homeowners and most professionals alike probably don’t need any higher average accuracy than + – 1/16″.’ I agree. Despite the minor shortcoming mentioned earlier I would recommend the purchase given the affordability of the product.

    Quantum Productivity Improvement
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m so impressed with the impact this product has had on my efficiency that I decided to write my first ever review on Amazon. For the sake of qualifying my comments here, I want to state that I am an amateur handyman. In other words, I have an office job that involves being in front of a computer most of the time, but I do ALL the basic construction, maintenance, and repairs around the house out of economic necessity. My skills are not extra special. I bought the Bosch DLR165K on impulse but was afraid it would just be a useless gadget in the toolbox until I received it and started using it about a month ago. I have used it to install fence posts, to build a desk for the kids, and too many other little measuring tasks to mention here. Once I quickly became comfortable with the device, I essentially stopped using my tape measure. The time savings, accuracy, and pure enjoyment of using this device rather than a clumsy tape measure is well worth the current price of $80 or even more. The accuracy is as stated, which is good enough for the basic furniture I make and it works even when bouncing the laser off a shiny white vinyl fence post 60 feet away. The complaint that others have stated that the measurements are shown in feet and inches and cannot be shown in inches alone is valid, but it has had no practical impact on my work. In short, this product will permanently change the way you work for the better.

  24. W. Costa says:

For the price, a perfect starter unit.
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
First off, if you are new to this kind of device, check out this short but very instructional video which describes the common features for these “laser tape measures”:

    [...]

I purchased this unit recognizing that it was not perfect, for reasons already covered by other reviewers. But it is a solid basic unit; it works, and works well. Here’s what I mean by basic. Unlike this Bosch model, some units like the Leica Disto have a timer function. What would you need a timer for? The timer delays when the measurement is taken after you push the button. This allows you to activate the unit, position it, and then hold it steady until it takes the measurement. Think blurred picture on a camera when you jab the shutter too quickly; or a missed rifle shot because you *pulled* the trigger rather than *squeezing* it. Only personal experience will tell you if you often find it hard to hold the unit steady while simultaneously pressing the button, and thus need that sort of feature.

In any case, experience with this unit will teach you what you need and don’t need in this sort of tool, and where the annoyances are. But at the same time, it is not a toy or a piece of junk, so you’re still getting good bang for your buck. After living for a while with this new kind of tool, you’ll be able to better determine if a good basic unit like this is all you will ever need, or if you indeed should eventually trade up, spending $300 or more one of the Leica Disto units or similar pro unit with more range and/or more features.

    It’s Super!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am not a carpenter who needs “super” accurate measurements to make cuts or anything. I work as a Realtor part time, and I purchased this to carry with me to do house showings. It’s a great handy device and works flawlessly. It’s way cooler than carrying a tape measure and SUPER fast. I carry this around so when my clients want to know how big a room is, I whip this bad boy out, beam the laser to the wall and in a few seconds I give my buyers some quick approximate measurements. I use it to measure how high ceilings are, how big rooms are, and so forth. It’s a great device, and very accurate. I laid out a tape measure 2 feet out to the wall and used this at the same distance as the tape measure and it came up 2 feet. I love it.

  28. Samuel L. Graham says:

    Great but one BIG flaw
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
As a professional carpenter, I use this device all the time. It’s great, but has one BIG flaw–it does not read in TOTAL inches. So instead of saying 78 inches, it will read 6′6″, which of course has caused me to cut boards at 66 inches before. Bosch’s updated measurer fixes this problem–buy the new updated model and save yourself a headache.

  29. Ana Angelica De Valente says:

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars

My luck ’cause I bought it for $90.

  30. Tyler Forge says:

    Sweetness
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve owned one of these for years and was a little surprised to see it on Amazon’s list of bought-by-you yet unrated stuff.

Quite simply, this is a great measuring tool. Very accurate, very repeatable, hasn’t broke. It has saved me a lot of time.

That said, it isn’t a complete replacement for a tape measure. Specifically, measuring a board. The laser beam has to bounce off of something and that board is lying flat. I solve the problem by pushing the end of the board against a wall or some similar artifice. Or I just use a tape measure.
